Second Creative Spark by MKV Design

Internationally renowned hotel interior architecture + design practice, MKV Design, is responsible for the space-planning and design of all the hotel and apartment interiors in the 45-storey Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences Emirates Pearl. Located in one of the most prestigious areas of Abu Dhabi, the “city resort” is adjacent to Etihad Tower and the Presidential Palace, looking towards the gardens of the Emirates Palace on one side and, on the other, the Arabian Sea. Destined to be a new architectural landmark in the city, the astonishing “twisted” oval tower rises from a five-storey podium. On guestroom floors, the rooms fan out from the central core providing each room with a magnificent view over the city or sea.

Working with the developer, MKV Design created a concept that was contemporary, timeless and which distinctly belongs in Abu Dhabi. Despite its size and the soaring volumes of its public areas, there is a human scale to the hotel and its understated elegance strikes a sophisticated tone designed to appeal to both international guests and the local community. It was therefore a concept that readily met the requirements for a Grand Hyatt when the operator was appointed several years later.

MKV’s concept combines four key narratives which reinterpret iconic regional symbols into a modern experience – the sand dunes of the desert, the water that surrounds Abu Dhabi, the fire of a Bedouin camp and the pearl. In fact, it was the designers who suggested “Pearl” as a name, referencing the pearl fishing of Abu Dhabi’s past and introducing an element which converts into a charming feature that threads through the hotel. Layout also ensures that the hotel is closely connected with the world outside. Not only do large terraces to all the guestrooms, apartments and public areas provide an unusual amenity in this region, but views from the inside are skilfully framed to enhance the sense of connection with place.
